This design was inspired by a poster created for the first Dominican Parade and Festival in New York in 1982, the Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration in Santiago, Dominican Republic, and the Flag Square in Santo Domingo. The inclusion of these landmarks represents the country's two principal cities, Santiago and Santo Domingo, while connecting the Dominican diaspora to the island's cultural and historical centers. Both the parade and the monument were created to honor the heroes and legacy of the Dominican Restoration War, fought between 1863 and 1865.
